The prism behind it
Clean up job titles
Fields
- Job title, as typed into the CRM or a form
Context
The titles come from the job title field of our CRM, filled in by contacts on web forms, by sales reps and by list imports. They are typed freely, with abbreviations such as Sr., Mgr, VP, Eng and Ops, and sometimes several roles or a region in one title. The answers fill the department, seniority and region columns used to segment campaigns and route leads. They describe the job title only, never the person.
Questions
Which department does this job title belong to? Choice
Go by the function the title names, reading through abbreviations. When the title names two roles, use the first. A title that names no function, such as "Manager" alone, is the insufficient information option.
How senior is the role this job title describes? Scale
Go by the level words in the title. A title with no level word, such as "Accountant" or "Software Engineer", is Mid. "Head of" a function is Director.
Which world region does the job title name, if any? Choice
Count a region, a country or a city written in the title, such as "(EMEA)", "UK & Ireland", "LATAM" or "Singapore". The region of the company or the contact is not judged here.
Does the job title combine two or more different roles? Yes / No
Count two jobs joined in one title, such as "Founder & CTO" or "Office Manager / Bookkeeper". One role over two related areas, such as "Rev Ops & Enablement", is one role. Yes: The title holds two or more different roles. No: The title holds one role.
Is the text a job title that can be classified? Yes / No
Answer No for text that is not a job title: blanks and fillers such as "n/a", "-" or "me", a company name, an email address, a test entry, or words such as "Student", "Retired" or "Looking for work". Yes: The text is a job title. No: The text is not a job title.
